IIT Madras: New eco-friendly cement being tested for use in industry

A research collaboration between India and Switzerland on a new cement material that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the manufacturing process is set to take off into implementation.

The construction sector is a major contributor to global carbon dioxide emissions. Though this is known, it appears difficult to reduce the scale of construction, especially as it is a route to establishing more equitable conditions in developing countries like India. One way of mitigating the emissions factor is the use of Limestone Calcined Clay Cement or the LC3 technology.

Developers seek change in Gujarat solar policy

Solar developers have petitioned Gujarat’s power regulator seeking a change in its solar policy, pointing out a major lacuna which is impeding the growth of solar rooftop capacity in the state. The policy permits only house owners themselves to set up solar plants on their roofs and is a barrier to leasing of roofs to solar developers.

Though Gujarat was a pioneer among Indian states in promoting solar energy, the petition from the Distributed Solar Power Association (DISPA), a newly formed group of developers specialising in rooftop solar plants, notes that unlike most other... Read more..

Scientists make methanol using oxygen

Scientists have found a way to produce methanol — an important chemical often used as fuel in vehicles — using oxygen in the air, an advance that may lead to cleaner, greener industrial processes worldwide.

Methanol is currently produced by breaking down natural gas at high temperatures into hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide before reassembling them — expensive and energy-intensive processes known as ‘steam reforming’ and ‘methanol synthesis.’

However, researchers from Cardiff University in the U.K. have discovered they can produce methanol from methane through simple... Read more..

India exploring carbon capture utilisation storage

As part of its climate change commitments in the aftermath of signing the historic Paris agreement India is now exploring the possibility of carbon capture utilization storage or CCUS.
A high-level Indian delegation attended an international meeting in Alabama last week looking into the possibility of adaptationofCCUS, which is the process of capturing waste carbon dioxide (CO2) from large point sources, such as fossil fuel power plants, transporting it to a storage site, and depositing it where it will not enter the atmosphere, normally an underground geological formation.

Wind power developers upset over Karnataka tariff revision

Wind power developers in Karnataka are up in arms over a September 4 tariff order of the state power regulator, which they claim is unfair to projects of 599 MW, for which power purchase agreements (PPAs) have already been signed.

The order reduces the feed-in tariff — the price at which state electricity distribution companies (discoms) are required to buy wind power — from Rs 4.50 per kwH, set by an order passed in October 2015, to Rs 3.74 per kwH.

The order further adds: “The tariff determined in this order shall also be applicable for the projects which have entered... Read more..

As demand grows, open market electricity tariff at 5-year high

The electricity sector did not witness such high prices in the last five years. Previously the Southern region used to pay higher prices due to lack of connectivity to the national grid but that anomaly too was removed since 2014.

Electricity tariff normally moves up in end-monsoon. In September 2016, the average tariff was ₹2.42 a unit, up... Read more..

EU likely to cut minimum import price for Chinese solar panels

The European Union is likely to reduce the minimum price that Chinese solar panel producers are allowed to sell into Europe after a meeting on Thursday of trade representatives from EU countries, EU sources said.

The possible reduction has been opposed by EU panel manufacturers who say it will kill jobs in the sector and EU importers and others in the industry who argue that it will not cut prices enough.

Chinese solar panel imports have been subject to measures to counter dumping and subsidies since 2013, with an 18-month extension agreed by EU countries earlier this year.... Read more..
