Cabinet apprised of India-Spain renewable energy MoU

The Union Cabinet has been apprised of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Spain on cooperation in renewable energy. The MoU was signed on May 30 in Madrid, Spain this year.

The MoU will help in strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries with the exchange of expertise and networking of information.

India Power in talks with 3 companies to acquire renewable projects

India Power Corporation is in talks with three large non-power companies in Gujarat and West Bengal for acquiring renewable generation capacity totalling 110 mw, a top official said.

Air quality in Delhi this August worse than that of last year: CPCB

Delhi’s air quality has suffered more in the first two weeks of August as compared to the same time last year, data collated by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) shows. Moreover, Delhi is the second most polluted city among the neighbouring ones including Gurgaon, Faridabad, Agra and Ghaziabad.

However, Ghaziabad, where air quality monitoring was started only this year, is the most polluted with an average air quality of 126.7 as compared to Delhi’s 112.
Delhi and surrounding areas see the best air quality in the months of July and August because of the rain.

Piyush Goyal rules out review of 5 per cent GST on solar equipment

Amidst reports that there is still lack of clarity on the 5 per cent goods and services tax (GST) levy on solar equipment, Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal has reiterated that there is no ambiguity as the government is very clear on the issue.

"There is no question of ambiguity on this. It has been made very clear that 5 per cent GST will be applicable on solar equipment. If they (equipment makers) still have issues with it, it is very sad and we cannot do anything," Goyal, who was in the megapolis, told over the weekend.

National Green Tribunal cracks whip on major waste generators, slaps hefty fines

The National Green Tribunal today cracked the whip on major waste generators in the city, including 5-star hotels and banquet halls, slapping fines of as high as Rs 7 lakh each on some of them for not complying with the solid waste management rules. 

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar imposed hefty fines on these defaulting bodies for failing to properly manage and treat sewage.

Smart cities take shape two years after launch of Modi’s flagship mission

Two years after the Central government launched its flagship Smart City Mission, the cities have started smartening up. First off the blocks is Pune with its hi-tech command-and-control centre, which has been developed as the nerve centre for urban governance to centrally manage traffic, water and electricity supply and provide CCTV-based city surveillance.

Finance Ministry issues norms for Central offices to retrofit energy efficient appliances

The Union Finance Ministry has issued guidelines for mandatory installation of energy efficient appliances in all Central Government buildings across India.

It has directed that usage of LED based lightings and energy efficient cooling equipment such as fans and air conditioners in government buildings will lead to savings in the long run through reduction in energy consumption.

DMRC’s Rewa solar power plan runs into trouble

A June order by the power ministry on inter-state electricity transmission charges could affect Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd’s (DMRC) plan to buy power from one of the world’s largest solar power project at a single site in Madhya Pradesh, forcing both DMRC and the state government to seek relief from the ministry of new and renewable energy.

Govt approves 10 Namami Gange projects worth Rs 2,033 cr

The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has approved 10 projects in Bihar, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh worth about Rs 2,033 crore, the Centre said today.

India adds 4.8 GW of solar capacity in the first half of 2017

India has added 4.765 MW of solar power generation in the first half of 2017, surpassing the 4,313 MW installed during 2016.

Of this, 1,869 MW was added in the second quarter of 2017, according to Mercom India Research. While large-scale solar installations aggregated to 1,639 MW in Q2 2017, rooftop installations accounted for 230 MW.
