Over 90% projects got green nod in 2015

Ninety percent of projects got environmental clearance in the country last year as compared to nearly 54% in 2014. Informing this in the Rajya Sabha, environment minister Anil Madha Dave in a written response to a Parliament question said, "Average percentage of such projects for the period from 2009 to 2014 was 87.79%".

Government seeks to tap energy wasted by factories as power source

The government has drawn up a plan to tap waste heat as a source of power. In a draft policy, the ministry of new and renewable energy estimates that the potential in selected industrial sectors for waste heat power generation (WHP) is about 5,000 megawatts (MW).

According to the draft, as much as 20-50% of the energy used by industry is wasted, being released into the environment in the form of exhaust gases and liquids that flow out of plants.

Delhi govt plans 20 centres to monitor PM 2.5 and PM 10

Hungry bacteria can help extract energy from sewage

Domestic sewage containing organic wastes, mainly from toilets and kitchens, may prove to be a source of energy that can be harvested by using hungry bacteria, scientists say.

"The levels of organic matter in sewage are too low to be directly recovered. We investigated how we can use bacteria to capture this material," said Francis Meerburg from Ghent University in Belgium.
