Electric vehicle sales slump 19.4% in FY2021 to 238,120 units

Electric vehicle sales in India registered a 19.4% slump to 238,120 units in FY2021 from 295,497 units recorded in FY2020, as revealed by the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicle (SMEV). The sales volume for the electric vehicles includes cumulative sales of electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers as well.

Coal India signs first 100 MW solar power purchase agreement

State-owned CIL on Friday said it has entered into its first ever power purchase pact with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) for sale of 100 mw solar power.

The tenure of power purchase agreement (PPA) is 25 years, Coal India Ltd (CIL) said in a statement.

"We feel upbeat that we could win in our first ever competitive bidding of solar auction. We will aggressively participate in more such auctions in future," CIL said in a statement.

In March, CIL had won a 100 mw solar power project in a reverse auction conducted by GUVNL.

Finance boost crucial to get all on board for net-zero emissions, says UN chief

BARCELONA, April 22 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The U.N. chief called for rich countries to make good on their promises of climate finance for developing nations at the G7 meeting in June, warning at a Thursday summit hosted by the U.S. president that the world is “at the verge of the abyss”.

Addressing the virtual summit on Earth Day, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said “dangerous greenhouse gases are at levels not seen in 3 million years”.

Lululemon launches new sustainability initiatives: garments made using ‘earth-friendly’ dyes

VANCOUVER – Canadian apparel brand Lululemon Athletica has announced the impending launch of two new sustainability initiatives to coincide with Earth Day.

In May, the company will introduce both a recommerce programme – called Lululemon Like New – and Earth Dye, a collection of garments made using ‘earth-friendly’ dyes.

Calvin McDonald, the brand’s CEO, said: “Our initiatives are both meaningful steps towards a circular ecosystem and demonstrate the sustainable innovation underway in product development and retail.”

China to cut coal use share below 56 per cent in 2021

BEIJING, - China aims to cut its coal use to below 56 per cent of energy consumption in 2021, the National Energy Administration (NEA) said in a statement on Thursday, but said the fuel would still play a vital role in ensuring the nation's energy security.

China, the world's biggest coal consumer, lowered the share of coal use in its primary energy mix to 56.8 per cent in 2020, from around 68 per cent at the beginning of the previous decade.

India has set a massive target of achieving 175 GW of Renewable capacity by year
2022 and is undergoing an energy transition. Around 94.4 GW of RE capacity has
been installed as on 31.03.2021. CEA has been actively monitoring and tracking
detailed information for conventional fuel plants, similar data is not readily available

Open Access Power Consumers in Tamil Nadu to Pay Additional Surcharge of ₹0.70/kWh

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has heard a petition filed by the distribution company and approved an additional surcharge of ₹0.70 (~$0.0093)/kWh, payable by open access consumers.

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) had requested an additional surcharge of ₹1.23 (~$0.016)/kWh.

The respondents to the petition were Tamil Nadu Spinning Mills Association; Indian Wind Power Association; Southern India Mills Association; Watsun Infrabuild Limited; and Tamil Nadu Power Producers’ Association.

India ranks 87th in global energy transition index

India has been ranked at the 87th position among 115 countries in the Energy Transition Index (ETI) that tracks nations on the current performance of their energy systems across various aspects, according to a report.

The report from the World Economic Forum (WEF) released on Wednesday and prepared in collaboration with Accenture also draws on insights from ETI.

U.S. pledges to slash solar energy costs by 60 per cent in a decade

The Biden administration on Thursday set a goal to cut the cost of solar energy by 60% over the next decade as part of an ambitious plan to decarbonize the United States' power sector by 2035.

The U.S. Department of Energy said the goal accelerates its previous utility-scale solar cost target by five years. For the U.S. power grid to run entirely on clean energy within 15 years, a key pillar of President Joe Biden's climate change agenda, solar energy will need to be installed as much as five times faster than it is today, DOE said.

NTPC tenders 1 GW of solar capacity

State-run power producer NTPC has invited bids to set up an aggregate 1 GW of grid-connected solar power projects anywhere in India. The installations will be set up on a build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) basis on the land identified and arranged by the developers.

Developers can compete for 250 MW up to all of 1 GW capacity on offer, in 10 MW multiples.

NTPC shall purchase the solar power from these plants at an initial tariff of INR 1.91/kWh for the first contract year, which shall be escalated at 01 paisa/kWh per year for the duration till the 25th year.

Install bird diverters until cables go underground: Supreme Court

Jaisalmer: The Supreme Court on Monday ordered to install bird diverters until the conversion of the overhead cables into underground power lines and to put the overhead cables into underground power lines wherever feasible, within a period of one year in Rajasthan and Gujarat. It has also ordered to hang bird diverters till that time from the existing power lines.

A 3-member committee has also been constituted to assess the feasibility of laying the overhead high-tension electricity wires underground.

Global CO2 emissions set for 2nd-biggest spike in history: IEA

Global CO2 emissions declined by 5.8% in 2020, or almost 2 Gt CO2 – the largest ever decline and almost five times greater than the 2009 decline that followed the global financial crisis. BP "lobbying to weaken" EU green investment, watchdog says
