India's electricity use falls in May due to COVID-19 lockdowns

CHENNAI - India's electricity use fell 6.2per centduring the first half of May compared with the second half of April, government data showed, as coronavirus lockdowns imposed by states across the country stifled power demand.

Total daily average electricity supply to states fell to 3,666 billion units during the first sixteen days of May, compared with 3,910 billion units during the second half of April, data from federal grid regulator POSOCO showed.

May 17 (Renewables Now) - Indian independent power producer ReNew Power Pvt Ltd today unveiled a plan to build a 2-GW solar cell and module factory in the state of Gujarat to supply its own projects and also sell components to other sector players.

CERC Approves Registration of India’s Third Power Exchange

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has granted Pranurja Solution Limited (PSL) registration right to establish and operate a power exchange.

It would make PSL the third power exchange in India after India Energy Exchange (IEX) and Power Exchange India (PXIL).

PSL was incorporated in 2018 as a consortium of PTC India (PTC), BSE Investments, and ICICI Bank. In 2018, The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), ICICI Bank, and PTC filed a petition with the CERC for a license grant to set up a new power exchange.

London — The world needs no new oil and gas developments and global oil demand would collapse by 75% under an energy scenario needed to put the world on a path to net-zero emissions by 2050, the International Energy Agency said May 18.

Compressed air tech for solar module cleaning, cooling shows promise in India field-testing

British scientists have reported significant restoration of the panel performance with the experimental compressed air system developed by them for the simultaneous cleaning and cooling of PV modules. The system was built with a compressed-air unit which was made of a compressor, an air tank, and an airflow regulation valve, and a series of nozzles. The technique was tested on a PV system located in northwestern India.

Merkel rejects bringing forward Germany’s exit from coal

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday rejected demands to bring forward an exit date for ending coal generation in Germany, currently set at 2038.

"Those affected need some reliability on the path to climate neutrality," Merkel said. "I don't want to unravel this again after one year."

Climate activists say that without an earlier coal phase-out, the more ambitious climate protection targets which Merkel’s government just agreed on cannot be achieved.

India launches anti-dumping investigation against the import of solar cells from China, Thailand and Vietnam

The commerce ministry has initiated an anti-dumping investigation against the import of solar cells from China, Thailand and Vietnam. The investigation was triggered by an application by the Indian Solar Manufacturers’ Association (ISMA).

Solar cells are the basic ingredient used in the manufacturing of solar modules and Chinese products are 15-20% cheaper than their Indian counterparts.

Adani Green Energy Ltd., majority-owned by Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, is in advanced talks to acquire privately-held SB Energy Holdings Ltd., according to people familiar with the matter.

China uses Uyghur forced labour to make solar panels, says report

The global production of solar panels is using forced labour from China's Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang province, an investigation has found.

Xinjiang produces about 45% of the world's supply of the key component, polysilicon, the research by the UK's Sheffield Hallam University says.

It says the material is obtained under a massive system of coercion, a claim denied by the Chinese authorities.

The report urges top panel makers to source the component elsewhere.
