PPA renegotiation by discoms may adversely impact RE sector growth: ICRA

Recent attempts by state-owned power distribution utilities (discoms) in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh to renegotiate or cancel signed Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with wind and solar power developers could have an adverse impact on the renewable energy (RE) sector, credit ratings agency ICRA has said.

New catalyst could reduce diesel vehicle pollution

Scientists have developed a catalyst that can curb emissions of nitrogen oxides from diesel-powered vehicles, an advance that may help reduce air pollution and smog.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) is a priority air pollutant that is a key ingredient in smog.

“Diesel engines power virtually all heavy-duty trucks, and NOx emissions control remains one of the key challenges facing manufacturers and operators,” researchers said.

NGT fines four government hospitals over waste disposal

The National Green Tribunal on Monday imposed fines on four government hospitals for not complying with the solid waste management rules. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar imposed environment compensation of Rs 50,000 each on Lady Hardinge Medical College and Indira Gandhi ESI, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia and Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan hospitals.

Amaravati to be an energy-efficient capital city, says energy principal secretary

he state government is committed to develop Amaravati as one of the most energy-efficient cities in the country, said state energy principal secretary Ajay Jain.

IBC SOLAR Signs Contract With SECI Over 20 MW Solar Plant in India

IBC SOLAR AG, a global leader in photovoltaic (PV) systems and energy storage, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a 20 MW AC solar plant with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The project was part of a 270 MW AC PV tender in the state of Odisha and assigned to IBC SOLAR through a competitive auction process during 2016. Russia’s Rosatom eyes Inox’s wind turbine manufacturing business

Jammu and Kashmir on way to have renewable energy corporation

J&K government is all set to establish Renewable Energy Corporation (REC) to harness solar energy in a “big way” and focus on tapping other renewable forms of energy in the state, which is known for its vast hydropower resources.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation commissions new construction waste recycling unit

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has commissioned a new facility at Rohini for recycling of construction and demolition waste generated by its construction works.

Inaugurated yesterday by DMRC Managing Director Mangu Singh, the plant can also be used by other agencies for recycling their construction related waste.
The DMRC said in a statement that construction waste generated by it are generally dumped at pre-designated sites identified and approved by the government.

Government exploring PPP model for handling e-waste in commercially viable manner

The Government is exploring the possibility of setting up an eco-park under public-private partnership mode to make research and development in e-waste recycling commercially viable, the environment ministry has told a parliamentary panel.

Street lighting programme lights up 50,000 km of roads with 3 million LEDs

The Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP) has led to the illumination of 50,000 km of Indian roads with installation of 30 lakh LED street lights across the country, the government said today.

The installation of 30 lakh LED street lights has resulted in 39 crore kwh of annual energy savings, an official statement said. Further, it helped in reduction of 3.29 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually.

Cochin Port Trust to set up second solar power plant of 100 Kilowatt capacity

The Cochin Port Trust (CPT) plans to set up its second solar power plant with 100kW capacity in its pump house at Willingdon Island.

“The Cochin Port is the only distribution agency which has been entrusted with the task of selling energy to other establishments on the Island. By embracing solar energy, CPT can considerably reduce its power procurement from Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). This procurement can be brought down by 15 to 20%. Chandigarh CREST society resumes installing solar power plants

After UT electricity department started giving gross-meter connections, Chandigarh Renewal Energy, Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST) has started the process of installing solar power plants.

CREST is going to install rooftop solar power plants (SPV) of total capacity of 2350 kilowatt peak (kWp) at two different locations. Green housing boost: €112-million SUNREF India Programme launched

The National Housing Bank (NHB) has joined hands with the French Development Agency (FDA) and the European Union to launch the SUNREF Housing India programme as part of efforts aimed at scaling up green housing projects in India.

SUNREF (Sustainable Use of Natural Resources and Energy Finance) Housing India will provide financing of €112 million to NHB, through a credit line of €100 million with AFD and a grant of €12 million financed by the European Union. West Bengal seeks Centre's relaxation to access clean energy fund

The Centre is yet to respond to West Bengal's demand for relaxation to access clean energy fund for small solar power projects in the state.

"The Centre is asking us to set up large solar parks in the state, but for that we need large tracts of land which is hard to get. So, we are asking it to consider funding small solar projects," state Power Minister Shobhandeb Chattopadhayay said at CII organised 'Energy Conclave'.

India enters global smart-meter race to fight utility losses

India is aiming to help its ailing power distribution companies by buying five million smart meters for two of its northern states in a global tender to be conducted later this month. 

Energy Efficiency Services Ltd., the government agency responsible for running the country’s energy efficiency programs, will conduct the tender, Managing Director Saurabh Kumar said in a phone interview.

Power Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday said India will probably be the first country in the world to use LEDs for all lighting needs by 2019, which would help the nation save over Rs 40,000 crore a year.

Climate change costs India $10 billion every year: Government

Extreme weather events are costing India $9-10 billion annually and climate change is projected to impact agricultural productivity with increasing severity from 2020 to the end of the century.

Indian Energy Exchange plea for spot trading of renewable energy shot down by CERC

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) did not approve the proposal of the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) to introduce spot trading of renewable energy on its platform. Discoms save Rs 15K crore under UDAY scheme

Debt-laden power distribution companies in states which participated in the UDAY scheme, meant for their revival, have saved Rs 15,000 crore till March this year, the power ministry said today. 

The Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY) was launched in November, 2015 and has completed more than 18 months of operation. 

"The participating DISCOMs have achieved net savings of approximately Rs 15,000 crore till March, 2017," the ministry said in a statement.

Government invites global bids for 10,000 electric cars

State-owned Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) has invited global bids for 10,000 electric sedans that will run up to 150 km on a single charge, for use by government departments, taking a big step to achieve power minister Piyush Goyal’s dream of having only electric cars on Indian streets by 2030.
