Biden's solar ambitions collide with China labor complaints

BEIJING - The Biden administration's solar power ambitions are colliding with complaints the global industry depends on Chinese raw materials that might be produced by forced labor.

A big hurdle is polysilicon, used to make photovoltaic cells for solar panels. The global industry gets 45% of its supply from Xinjiang, the northwestern region where the ruling Communist Party is accused of mass incarceration of minorities and other abuses. Other parts of China supply 35%. Only 20% comes from U.S. and other producers.

UAE asks to host 2023 UN climate change conference

The United Arab Emirates has asked to host the COP 28 international conference on climate change in 2023, Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan said on Sunday.

The annual Conference of Parties (COP) is the decision-making body responsible for monitoring and reviewing the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Nitish asks officials to speed up installing smart meters in every house

PATNA: Reiterating his demand for ‘one nation, one electricity rate’ in the country, CM Nitish Kumar asked the energy department to accelerate the installation of prepaid smart meters in each household of Bihar on Saturday.

Total dues owed by electricity distribution companies to power producers fell 3.4 per cent to Rs 78,379 crore in March 2021 as compared to the year-ago period, showing a reversal of discoms' growing outstandings.

Outstanding dues of discoms towards electricity producers have been increasing year-on-year as well as month-on-month for years showing perennial stress in the power sector till February this year.

In climate push, G7 agrees to stop international funding for coal

The world’s seven largest advanced economies agreed on Friday to stop international financing of coal projects that emit carbon by the end of this year, and phase out such support for all fossil fuels, to meet globally agreed climate change targets.

Dutch group ZDHC updates its leather wastewater guidelines

ZDHC, a global multi-stakeholder initiative of over 160 contributors within fashion and footwear industry, has announced that during the wastewater testing in tropical locations, by replacing the test for faecal coliform with an absence/presence test for E.coli, it improves the accuracy of wastewater testing and reduces the need for confirmation testing.

According to the group, naturally occurring organisms can be mistaken for faecal coliforms thereby increasing the possibility of a false-positive result in wastewater testing.

Financial companies, Singapore's SGX to launch carbon offsets exchange

London — A group of banks and other financial companies has teamed up with the Singapore Exchange to launch a trading platform for voluntary carbon offset credits, the companies said May 20.
"CIX will leverage satellite monitoring, machine learning and blockchain technology to enhance the transparency, integrity and quality of carbon credits that deliver tangible and lasting environmental impact," the companies said in a statement.

Haryana Issues Guidelines for Solar Parks by Private Developers

The New and Renewable Energy Department, Haryana, has issued guidelines for developing solar parks in the state by private entrepreneurs without central financial assistance.

The solar park developers are required to submit their proposals to the Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency (HAREDA) along with the detailed project report and all relevant land documents. About 7 GW of unsigned PSAs pose risk to renewable energy targets: CRISIL

New Delhi: Delays in power supply agreements (PSAs) for about 7 gigawatt (GW) of the bid out renewable energy projects might lead to 35 per cent shortfall in the 160-GW renewable energy capacity target set for the end of calendar year 2022, according to CRISIL Research.

India has moved up a spot to third position on EY's Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index owing to an exceptional performance on the solar photovoltaic (PV) front. US and China are in the first and the second spot, respectively.

International Finance Corporation (IFC) part of the World Bank Group plans to invest up to $15 million in South Asia Growth Fund II, L.P (SAGF II) focussed on investing in companies focussed on clean energy.

India’s utility-scale solar installations fell by 39% in FY2021

India added about 3.5 GW of new utility-scale solar capacity in the 12 months (April 1, 2020-March 31, 2021) of FY2020-21, about 39% less than the FY2019-20 installations.
