Last Month's CDM Pipeline Report

Last month broke a number of records: it saw the highest amount of carbon credits issued Globally (48 million CERs valued at $720 million) as well as for India (2.2 million CERs valued at $33 million), with an increasing number of projects entering the CDM pipeline and approvals flying even faster.

Increased staffing and a mandate to clear the backlog at the CDM offices in Bonn are the key reasons for these numbers. To put the January figure in perspective, about 540 million CERs have been issued since the Clean Development Mechanism began. And currently about 78 million CERs are still in the pipeline pending approval. Hence the rise in issuance that began in November 2010 and continues to-date should be seen as a clearing of back-log.

This sudden flow of offsets into the market has resulted in the price of CERs falling from a level of 13-15 Euros to about 11-12 Euros within the EU ETS (Emission Trading Scheme).

India's 2.2 million CERs were from 52 projects, with the largest being a 119.8 MW Natural Gas based Combined Cycle Power Plant, at Tanjavur, Tamilnadu by M/s Aban Power Company Limited  (271K CERs). The January issuance number compares with 2010's monthly average of 396,741 CERs.

The sudden pace of approvals in the last 60 days, will surely get an increased interest going in 'carbon credits' as firms that had planned for a longer liquidity cycle see that the time between registration and realization may be falling.
