3rd Water Innovation Summit 2017 & National Awards for Excellence in Water Management
Water is a resource central to all aspects of life. While it has a basic function in maintaining the natural environment, it is also a key driver of economic and social development. Renewable fresh water is an increasingly scarce commodity and the amount of fresh water available to people is finite. Regional and local water shortages have always existed because of the inequalities of the hydrological cycle, but a global view also indicates that the entire hydrologic cycle is nearing the limits of use. Drivers such as demographic and climatic changes further increase the stress on water resources.
Growing population coupled with sustainable developmental efforts has an expected increasing stress on water resources. The uneven distribution over time and space of water resources and their modification through human use and abuse are sources of water crises in many parts of the world. All these result in intensifying the pressure on water resources leading to conflict among users and excessive pressure on the environment.
